New York State Cyber Security Regulations

New York State is the first state in the nation to impose cyber security regulations (23 NYCRR PART 500) on banks, insurance companies, and certain other business in the financial industry.

The new regulations outline the things companies are required to do to protect their customer’s data from hackers and guidelines for how and when security breaches must be disclosed to the state. The laws are complicated and unfortunately, not being aware of them is not a defense. Please take the first step below to find out if your company is a covered entity.

Step 1

Search here to see if your company is supervised by the New York State Department of Financial Services.

Step 2

If you are in the database, familiarize yourself with the regulations in this document and review this website.

Step 3

Asses your situation from a technical perspective. A cyber security audit is a good place to start. Typically cyber security audits are done by a third party. If you need help with a cyber security call (631) 756-0404 or send us a message using the form on this page.

Step 4

Talk to an Attorney that understands the law and is technical enough to work with your IT provider.
